Position Summary: Assists with basic patient care based on individual patient needs within the scope of practice under direct supervision of the registered nurse. Maintains environment that is prepared for patient care.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides supportive care to the Emergency Department patients under the direct supervision of the registered nurse or physician. Performs approved procedures per policy.
- Responsible for taking, documenting and reporting vital signs. Reports abnormal results immediately to registered nurse.
- Takes height and weight measurements.
- Places ECG electrodes and attaches ECG monitor correctly.
- Assists with setting up oxygen per instructions.
- Assists registered nurse and physicians with assessments, examinations and treatment.
- Records I&O, collects specimens.
- Notifies appropriate licensed staff when patient complains of pain.
- Observes, documents and reports patient condition and changes in condition to the registered nurse.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
- Performs other duties as in-serviced, including crutch walking, dressing changes and assisting physician with splint or cast application.
- Performs and assists with technical skills as defined in scope of practice.
- Receives and carries out instructions accurately and promptly. All patient care activities are delegated and supervised by the registered nurse.
- Transports patients, as necessary. Assists with moving, ambulating and lifting patients.
- Documents patient care performed, including vital signs, bedside care and observations.
- Adheres to hospital policy addressing standard precautions, safety regulations and guidelines.
- Communicates in an effective and efficient manner with all documentation, and with all coworkers, patients, visitors and physicians.
- Responds to patient and visitor questions and needs immediately and within established standards.
Professional Requirements:
- Completes annual education requirements.
- Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
- Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
- Maintains regulatory requirements, including all federal, state, local regulations and accrediting organization standards related to the Medical Surgical Unit and, as appropriate, to the hospital.
- Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
- Wears identification while on duty.
- Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
- Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire safety, emergency management and infection prevention and control.
- Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directive to staff and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department.
REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:
- High School graduate or equivalent with one (1) year experience in acute hospital setting or in ambulance; EMT certification preferred.
- Current BLS Certification.
- Current EMT Certification (preferable).
- Basic EKG course, may obtain within six (6) months of hire.
- Medical terminology.
