Admitting Department Manager

Position Title: Admitting Department Manager                       

Status: Full-Time

Position Summary:  Responsible for managing all aspects of the Admitting Department, Outpatient Registration and the Emergency Department Registration areas.  Ensures efficient and orderly admission of inpatients and admitting process of individuals who have hospital-based outpatient testing or procedures.  Maintains open communication with the Nursing Supervisor, Business Office, Environmental Services and Administration


  • Responsible for the Admitting Department, including reservations for hospital services, preadmitting patients, verifying insurance eligibility, admitting outpatients and inpatients.
  • Establishes, reviews and updates short-term and long-term goals in order to be consistent with hospitalwide plans.
  • Manages the Admitting Department in a cost-effective manner by utilizing current materials, management techniques, maximizing human resources and continuously reevaluating the manner in which services are provided.
  • Responsible for providing inservices to the Admitting Department staff concerning issues such as Conditions of Admissions, advance directives, patient’s rights and responsibilities, HIPAA regulations and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Establishes specific and necessary planning, control and quality assurance mechanisms that monitor patient registration, administrative and economic outcomes.
  • Communicates clearly and concisely within the department and with other hospital departments.
  • Responsible for maintaining performance improvement activities in the Admitting Department.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Professional Requirements:

  • Completes annual education requirements.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements, including all federal, state, local regulations and accrediting organization standards related to the Medical Surgical Unit and, as appropriate, to the hospital.
  • Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Wears identification while on duty.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire safety, emergency management and infection prevention and control.
  • Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directive to staff and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department.


  • High school graduate, a Bachelor’s Degree in business or related field.
  • Three (3) years previous management experience in a healthcare setting or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
