Position Title: Assistant Director of Nursing                                     

Status: Full-Time

Position Summary:  The Assistant Director of Nursing is responsible for promoting and maintaining quality patient care through effective management of the activities of the total patient care services during his/her assigned shift.  Assists in organizing and administering the Department of Nursing; assumes responsibilities delegated by Director of Nursing to assure that service complies with professional, State, Federal, and licensing agencies.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for carrying out hospital/nursing policies, procedures and standards.
  • Assists in the development of standards of nursing care and practice.
  • Conducts conferences and discussions with employees to encourage input and participate in the formulation of policies, procedures, and the assessment of systems of care delivery and the pursuit of improved service.
  • Coordinates activities on units to achieve and maintain efficient service, harmonious relations, and cooperation with Medical Staff to improve patient service.
  • Serves as an educational resource for topics in Nursing Service quality improvement/management for all nurses within the Department of Nursing, the hospital, and at the request of others.
  • Assists in the development of the philosophy, objectives, and goals of the Department of Nursing which supports the mission and philosophy of Williamson Memorial.
  • Responsible for visiting all patient care units to ascertain condition of patients, evaluate staffing needs and provide support to caregivers.
  • Administers the effective distribution and utilization of staff employed during the respective shift.
  • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  • Keeps the Nurse Executive, his/her representative and/or the Administrator informed regarding circumstances or situations which have or may have serious impact.
  • Assumes the duties as outlined in the Emergency Management Manual.
  • Evaluates accuracy of staffing systems.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Performs age specific patient assessment demonstrating awareness of growth and development for each age group.  Demonstrates knowledge of age specific assessment, recognizing psychosocial levels and developmental patterns.  Provides for age appropriate stimulation and learning needs.
  • Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain.  Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques.  Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
  • Adheres to and follows the principles of Williamson Memorial’s Quality Service Management program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Professional Requirements:

  • Completes annual education requirements.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements, including all federal, state, local regulations and accrediting organization standards related to the hospital.
  • Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire safety, emergency management and infection prevention and control.
  • Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directive to staff and encourages interactive departmental meetings and discussions.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department.

REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Minimum: Associates Degree or Diploma Required; Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Two to three years nursing experience required; five to seven years of nursing experience preferred. Management experience in hospital/health care environment and nursing supervisory experience required.
  • Current West Virginia Registered Nurse Licensure, or current multi-state licensure within state of practice.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification.
