Status: FULL-TIME
Position Summary: Precisely and accurately preforms and evaluates a variety of technical procedures. Utilizes accepted quality control techniques by manual, semi‑automated, or automated methodologies and equipment. Performs phlebotomy procedures and assists in other laboratory activities as requested. The Medical Laboratory Technician is competent in providing direct care to patients within the following age brackets: neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Demonstrates knowledge of job, which enables the MLT to perform procedures expeditiously.
- Demonstrates a complete understanding of established procedures within the department as outlined in the various procedure manuals.
- Demonstrates knowledge of department procedures, necessary to train new employees during their designated training period as established by the Director of Laboratory.
- Demonstrates the ability to differentiate results of various tests to determine the accuracy of test results.
- Exhibits understanding of the most commonly used computer functions.
- Willingly takes responsibility for own continuing education by seeking out and attending workshops and educational programs.
- Performs high quality work as demonstrated by accuracy and precision.
- Demonstrates the ability to follow established departmental procedures.
- Verifies that quality control values are valid before reporting patient results. Takes proper corrective action for any out of range results.
- Verifies that the proper specimen is being analyzed for the proper patient for the requested test procedure.
- Performs daily and other routine maintenance on equipment as required and notes corrective action deemed necessary.
- Keeps work area clean, neat and disinfected by the end of the shift.
- Regularly inspects instruments and insures that the equipment is in proper working order so that test results will be accurate.
- Calibrates equipment accurately according to manufacture guidelines.
- Performs quality assurance studies as requested.
- Reports to the next shift any incomplete work so as to insure continuity of patient care.
- Calls all critical results in the time frames set for Laboratory.
- Participates in Proficiency testing as assign, and helps perform corrective action if needed, base on results.
- Indicates knowledge and organization of workload through quality of work produced.
- Performs blood collection procedures when required, in a timely manner to insure availability of test results. Follows established protocol.
- Demonstrates competency in blood collection of all age brackets: neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
- Regularly demonstrates the ability to coordinate a simultaneous series of tests with complete accuracy.
- Demonstrates the flexibility to adjust schedule in response to stat orders and fluctuations
in patient workload.
- Insures completed results are reported to the appropriate areas in a timely manner.
- Demonstrates sound judgment and wise decision making skills through testing and reporting laboratory specimens.
- Recognizes any day‑to‑day variations in test results and investigates before reporting results.
- Performs repeat testing when results are questionable and consults with supervisor as needed.
- Judges the adequacy or accuracy of submitted specimens and orders recollection specimens if indicated.
- Recognizes any instrument malfunction and makes correction or contacts service representative.
- Recognizes and notifies supervisor about low supply inventory; is conscientious about not waiting until supply is depleted.
- Demonstrates the ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives and choose an appropriate course of action.
- Plans and utilizes time in order to ensure accurate and timely reporting of laboratory tests.
- Opens, checks off, and stores supplies upon receipt.
- Performs duties in an independent manner with little or no supervision.
- Demonstrates enthusiasm in performing and accepting work assignments.
- Takes responsibility all procedures completed during shift regardless of workload without sacrificing the quality of work performed.
- Follows through on tests left from previous shifts.
- Performs other duties as assigned by management in a professional and cooperative manner.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have A. A. degree in Medical Laboratory Technology Must acquire West Virginia State License within ninety days.
- Previous experience as medical laboratory technician required.
ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURE:
- Biological, electrical, and chemical exposure on a day to day basis to biological hazards, electrical equipment and various chemicals. Requires exposure to communicable diseases and especially blood and body fluids. Exposure to clinical laboratory situations and occasional exposure to radiation.
