Phlebotomist

Status: Full- Time

Position Summary:  Performs venipunctures and skin punctures competently and expediently.  Has thorough knowledge of test requirements, assists in Clinical Laboratory as needed.  Responsibilities include bleeding time tests, blood cultures, blood samples.  Participates in performance improvement activities.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for consistently draws blood competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible.
  • Responsible for identifying the patient – comparing patient information on the requisition to the patient’s identification band before venipuncture is performed.
  • Responsible for displaying courteous, professional manner towards patients and co-workers.
  • Responsible for performing all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety.
  • Responsible for labeling and recording all test tubes, logs procedures, files paperwork.
  • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  • Responsible for being knowledgeable about which color top tube to use and the volume of blood needed – knows test requirements.
  • Follows Standard Precautions at all times.
  • Responsible for disposal of all sharps in a rigid sharps disposal container.
  • Cleans and restocks venipuncture trays.  Maintains work areas.  Orders supplies when needed.
  • Completes duties in a time efficient manner.
  • Assists laboratory technician, does clerical work when needed.
  • Follows policies and procedures for the Clinical Laboratory and the hospital.
  • Completes all other duties as assigned by management.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completes annual education requirements.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
  • Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.
  • Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department.

REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Medical Assistant or Phlebotomy certification preferred.
  • Eighty (80) hours of training in the proper procedure to be employed in the performance of venipuncture and skin punctures under the supervision of the Chief Medical Technologist.
